Current Transformers
A Current Transformer (CT) is an electrical device used to measure alternating current (AC). It produces a reduced current accurately proportional to the current in the circuit, which can then be safely monitored and recorded. ACTOM Protection & Control offers a wide range of a wide range of LV Current Transformers ranging anything 100/5A to 2000/5A.
Application:
A CT works on the principle of electromagnetic induction. It has:
- A primary winding (connected in series with the load)
- AÂ magnetic core
- A secondary winding (connected to measuring instruments or meters)
The current flowing through the primary winding induces a proportional current in the secondary winding, which is typically scaled down (e.g., 100:5 or 1000:5 ratio).
Uses in Energy Metering:
Current transformers are essential in energy metering, especially in high-current applications. Here’s how they are used:
- Safe Measurement:
CTs allow energy meters to measure large currents indirectly, reducing the risk of damage or danger. - Accuracy in Billing:
They ensure precise current measurement, which is critical for accurate energy billing in commercial and industrial settings. - Isolation:
They provide electrical isolation between the high-voltage power circuit and the low-voltage metering circuit. - Load Monitoring:
CTs help utilities and facility managers monitor load profiles and detect overloading or imbalances. - Integration with Smart Meters:
In smart metering systems, CTs feed real-time current data to meters that calculate energy consumption, power factor, and other parameters.
Voltage Transformers
A Voltage Transformer (VT), also known as a Potential Transformer (PT), is an instrument transformer used to step down high voltage to a lower, standardized voltage level that can be safely measured and monitored by meters and protective relays. ACTOM Protection & Control offers a wide range of a wide range of LV Voltage Transformers ranging anything from 550/110V and 500/110V etc.
How it works:
- It operates on the principle of electromagnetic induction.
- The primary winding is connected to the high-voltage circuit.
- The secondary winding delivers a proportionally lower voltage to measuring instruments.
Uses in Energy Metering and Power Systems:
- Safe Voltage Measurement:
VTs allow meters and relays to measure high voltages indirectly, ensuring safety and protecting sensitive equipment. - Accurate Billing:
In high-voltage industrial or utility-scale systems, VTs provide precise voltage data for energy meters to calculate consumption accurately. - System Monitoring:
They help monitor voltage levels across the grid, ensuring stability and detecting anomalies like overvoltage or undervoltage. - Protection Systems:
VTs feed voltage data to protective relays, which can trigger circuit breakers during faults (e.g., short circuits or voltage surges). - Isolation:
They electrically isolate the measuring instruments from the high-voltage power lines, enhancing safety.
